The Svalbard Seed Vault spans more than 320 feet amid a mountain between Norway and the Arctic, and contains a huge collection of seeds in a cellar designed to withstand man-made and natural disasters. If a major disaster strikes, 890,000 preserved seed samples from nearly every country in the world will ensure people have diverse food options. The vault is only open a few times a year, and only a limited number of depositors are allowed in to place the seeds in their shelves.
