Artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize a wide range of occupations, in a prediction that carries fears for many workers who are wary of seeing their jobs shift or disappear.

And what was before November 2022 after the launch of the "GBT Chat" program is not the same as after it. The so-called generative artificial intelligence showed the ability to respond in a documented manner to everything that is asked of it in a common language.

"People are beginning to realize that some of the skills they have developed and specialized in can be replaced by artificial intelligence in a real-world way," says a graphics worker who did not wish to be named.

In her case, the shock came from images created by programs including "Midjourney" and "Stile Defusion" and posted online last year.

The New York native, accustomed to a media industry that has seen massive layoffs, is now unsure of what jobs in her field will look like "in 5 years or even sooner."
Worried about technology

"Everything new and unfamiliar causes anxiety," says New York-based psychoanalyst Claire Gustafson, who has many of her patients touch on artificial intelligence. "Technology is advancing so fast that it's hard to find reference points for it."

One entertainer raised concerns with psychotherapist Merice Powell about artificial intelligence in film and television, a key point at which actors and screenwriters in Hollywood are striking.

Gustafsson asserts that "the creative professions are the ones that face the greatest concern" in this regard.

But programmers, telephone consultants, legal or financial professionals, accountants or journalists are already in the crosshairs of generative AI that can produce an article or any text in seconds.

Analysts from Goldman Sachs indicate that generative AI removes or reduces the content of about 300 million jobs, according to a study published last March.

"I expect my job to become old within 10 years, because the capabilities of artificial intelligence allow it to perform most of the tasks that bank employees perform," says Eric, 29, who works in a bank and intends to change his profession.

Acceptance of the unknown

“When ChatGBT penetrated people's lives, everyone got worried, even psychotherapists,” says Claire Gustafson, with some talking about the possibility of being replaced by AI.

"Only climate change and the coronavirus have caused this great concern on a social level," she adds, who specializes in supporting people facing professional changes, and notes that she works with her patients to help them "accept the unknown" and "find ways to use new technologies to their advantage."

On the other hand, Sean Jonas, who works in the field of two- and three-dimensional graphics, says, "Because artificial intelligence will be able to do the bulk of the tasks, I will lose a number of skills," stressing that this does not cause him any pressure. "I see it as a new tool to be added to other tools," he added. In the future, he believes, artists will still be able to stand out from artificial intelligence "by maintaining a unique style."
