Ethiopia: More than 80 killed in protests after the killing of a famous singer


More than 80 people have been killed in protests in Oromia region, following the death of a famous singer, Pedasa Merdasa, Commissioner of Ethiopia's regional police, told the radio on Wednesday.

Commissioner Pedasa Merdasa added that the dead included 78 civilians and 3 security personnel.

The number does not include the number of dead in the capital, Addis Ababa, where a policeman was killed and an unspecified number of people in three explosions on Tuesday.

The singer Hashalu was shot dead on Monday evening.

Hashalu criticized the Ethiopian leadership last week in an interview with the media network owned by the influential activist and businessman, Mohamed Gohar.

The singer's killing sparked protests in several Oromo cities.

Showed footage circulating on social media large crowds surrounded a car allegedly carrying the body of the slain singer Hachalw and moving slowly to his hometown in the town of Ambo, which lies about 100 kilometers to the east of Addis Ababa.

The singer knew of his revolutionary singing, expressing the hopes and anger of the "Oromo" people through revolutionary words to challenge oppression and break fear, and songs focused on freedom issues.

It is noteworthy that the body of Hashalu was transferred to the town of Ambu, about 100 km west of the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
