Madarija Aradondo, the Minneapolis police chief, had confirmed that Chauvin had broken police department rules.

Aradondo told the jury that what Chauvin had done "is not part of our training and it is certainly not part of our ethics and values... Chauvin violated moral laws in the manner of his fatal arrest of Floyd."

Judge Peter Cahill said his sentence was not based on "emotion or sympathy"
Prosecutors had asked for 30 years, saying Chauvin's actions "shocked the nation’s conscience"
With good behaviour, Chauvin, 45, could be paroled after serving about 15 years
It is reported that Floyd died on April 25 after Chauvin knelt on his neck for about nine minutes, preventing him from breathing normally.

The death of George Floyd caused a wave of massive demonstrations against racial discrimination and police violence against African Americans that shook the United States and other countries.
